If you are planning to rent a car in Australia, there are a few things you need to know before you do so. We have accumulated some of the most important questions and answers that you will need to have peace of mind on arriving at, and departing from, Sydney Airport. If you can, try and book your car hire ahead of time. This will save you time and money and allow for your trip to be a breeze.
In Australia, drivers must be at least 21 years old to rent a vehicle and hold a full driving license. You should be aware, however, that the rules can differ between suppliers. Drivers under the age of 24 may be required to pay a daily underage surcharge or could be restricted from hiring certain kinds of vehicles.
The price you’ll pay for a rental car is often dependent on the type of car you want to hire, the time of year, who you hire the car from, and where. Renting a car from the airport can be more expensive than renting one from the city for example.
When you are picking up your hire vehicle, you’ll need to pay via credit card. A small number of providers accept debit cards, but more often than not, you will need to have a credit card.
Most, if not all, hire car companies will ask you for a security deposit when you arrive to collect your car hire. This amount will vary depending on the type of vehicle you’re renting, how you are paying, and where you are collecting your rental car.
Many visitors to Australia, or those travelling from out of state purchase travel insurance or use the insurance offered through their credit card. It’s important to check the terms and conditions of your insurance policy to ensure that it covers car rentals.
Rental cars in Australia will have an excess amount when it comes to making an insurance claim. The excess is the amount that you will be liable to pay for any damage caused to the vehicle. You can buy excess reduction products from most rental car providers in order to reduce your financial liability.
Car rental companies in Australia generally accept English-language driving licences, as long as they have a photograph. If your driving licence is not in English, you will also need an International Driving Permit. Please note that car rental companies will not accept provisional licences - you will need to hold a full licence.
All of the car hire rates mentioned in this article serve as a guide only. While they were accurate at the time of publishing, prices can and do change regularly.
