Global Airport Parking Report 2020

Let’s face it, no one likes paying too much for airport parking. It’s one of those costs that people often forget to take into account when booking a holiday, leading to all sorts of nasty surprises. Leave it too late to book and your parking could cost more than your plane tickets!

Australian airports have a reputation for charging some of the highest prices for long term parking in the world, but are they deserved? We’ve all heard that Sydney Airport charges more than any other airport in the country, but how does it compare to airports overseas?

We looked into the cost of a one week (eight days) stay at the official airport car parks in the world’s 50 busiest airports, to see how Australian airport parking prices compare.

You might be surprised to learn that Sydney came in at no. 16 on our list, and Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth were nowhere to be seen! Singapore’s Changi Airport was the most expensive, where you’ll pay the equivalent of 481.76 AUD for a week’s parking (without prior booking). 

If you parked at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport or Indonesia’s Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, you’d pay under 53 AUD  - close to 89% less for the same period of time!

How Did We Rank the Airports?

To calculate our Global Airport Parking Report for 2020, we researched the cost of parking for a week at each of the world’s 50 busiest airports. You can view our source, the 2019 preliminary list of busiest airports by passenger traffic, on Wikipedia. 

Parking prices were collected in the local currency for each airport, based on the cheapest available at-terminal parking option. These prices were then converted in Australian dollars ($), GBP (£), USD ($) and EUR (€) using xe.com on June 12, 2020.

Parking space availability and pricing at some airports was likely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, at the time that the report was produced. Airport authorities around the world have handled the pandemic in different ways - some lowering parking rates in an effort to attract customers, others by closing their budget lots indefinitely.
